Brief Introduction

Salicin is a naturally occurring compound found in the bark of several species of trees, primarily North American in origin, that are from the willow, poplar, and aspen families. White willow, from whose Latin name, Salix alba, the term salicin is derived, is the most well known source of this compound, but it is found in a number of other trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants as well being synthesized commercially. It is a member of the glucoside family of chemicals and is used as an analgesic and antipyretic. Salicin is used as a precursor for the synthesis of salicylic acid and acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin.

A colorless, crystalline solid in its pure form, salicin has the chemical formula C13H18O7. Part of its chemical structure is equivalent to the sugar glucose, meaning it is classified as a glucoside. It is soluble, but not strongly so, in water and alcolhol. Salicin has a bitter taste and is a natural analgesic and antipyretic, or fever reducer. In large quantities, it can be toxic, and overdoses may lead to liver and kidney damage. In its raw form, it may be mildly irritating to skin, respiratory organs, and eyes.

    THT#5: Goji berries.
    Hey!
I’ve always been a little suspicious of the hype around goji berries, but here we are, with goji berries sitting nicely in the health tray… And to be fair, they’ve earned it. Coming from Himalayan regions goji berries have been used for over a thousand years in Tibet, as medicine! The berries were used to treat all kinds of things, from liver problems to insomnia. You name it and goji berries were probably used to treat it! These little red berries have even had poems written about them! With a secure place, here are the top 5 health benefits of goji berries:
    1. Goji berries are eye lovers, they’re high in antioxidants like zeaxanthin which is known to protect against various forms of oxidative stress. They’re also high in vitamin A which is always a good deal for the eyes.
    2. These berries have been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine to provide energy among other things. More recently, studies have been conducted that conclude that the participants who ate goji berries saw an increase in their energy levels and overall well-being.
    3. Goji berries are a nutrient bomb! They’re a complete protein, meaning that they contain all the 9 amino acids that the body can’t produce. They’re also a good source of fiber, riboflavin, iron, potassium, zinc, copper, vitamin A, vitamin C and selenium. Yes, it’s a long list.
    4. We all love giving our immune system a hand. Goji berries are known to be anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. It’s always going to be a good help when there’s such a large amount of anti-oxidants! Goji’s are also thought to naturally detoxify the liver. The more you know, eh!
    5. Goji’s are expert healers. The flavonoids and carotenoids are especially good at healing blood capillaries. Goji berries increase cell regeneration and betters cell health. They’re also known to perform wonders on the skin and this is partly down to being high in beta-carotene.

So are goji berries good for you? I can say with confidence that they are indeed good for you and I!
