[What is Kava?]

Kava, also known as piper methysticum, kava kava, and ‘awa, is a small shrub native to the islands in the South Pacific. The root and stems are made into a non-alcoholic, psychoactive beverage that has been used socially and ceremonially for hundreds of years in Hawaii, Fiji, and Tonga.

Kava is traditionally prepared by placing ground root and stem into a porous sack, submerging in water, and squeezing the juice into a large, carved, wooden bowl. Coconut half-shell cups are dipped and filled — punch bowl style. After drinking a cup or two a feeling of heightened attention combined with relaxation begins to come on. Although it is soothing, it is unlike alcohol in that thoughts remain clear. The flavor is largely inoffensive, but some find that it takes getting used to; it really depends on your preference for earthy flavors.

[Kava is Safe to Use]

The safe and effective benefits of kava to relieve symptoms of anxiety were also supported in a meta-analysis, a systematic statistical review of seven human clinical trials published in 2000 in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, and again in a similar critical review in 2001. The reviews did not find significant adverse effects related to liver toxicity.

In conclusion, the liver is affected by many substances, including prescription and non- prescription drugs, as well as alcohol, which is a major cause of liver damage. We must be aware that herbs are potent medicines, to be treated with the appropriate respect regarding potential interactions and toxicity, including to the liver. On the other hand, Kava kava’s margin of safety far surpasses that of it’s pharmaceutical equivalent.

Kava’s can help offset a number of problems, most notably stress, anxiety, and disrupted sleep patterns. However, kava’s anxiolytic (anti-panic or anti-anxiety agent) and calming properties can offset many other stress and anxiety related ailments.

The ingredients of his traditional Nigeria medicine include a variety of local herbs and plants, such as banana placenta, apples, plantain and palm wine:

“We have Bitter leaf and use it to cure mouth odor. We have Bitter lemon and we use it for people that are obese, to remove excess fat and people that are hypertensive,” says Dr Promise.

For hernia or appendix, instead of surgery, he recommends:

“Take 5 liter of the freshly tapped palm wine, mix it with reasonable quantity of the young banana shoot, boil it for 30 – 40 mins, filter it and drink the water for 21 days – you will piss out the dissolved hernia.”

The customers are passers by on the roadside who stop to ask questions on health related issues, he teaches them how to combine herbs, and they sometimes give out herbs to people for free in tiny plastic bags.

Dr Promise says he was trained by a Dr Kelly in Cameroon; he moved to Nigeria one or two years ago and business is booming:

“It has been marvoulous – people troop in, people take medicine and are coming for more!”

This video was created for my Environmental Studies class about Invasive Species found in Ohio. The goal was to not only show my fellow classmates about the invasive species but give them a glimpse about the damage invasive species can cause or why they are harmful to not only the environment but our pockets as well. Below I have listed the invasive species shown and some information about them. I have included links so that you may read up more on each species.

By increasing our knowledge of the “enemy” we may then learn how to stop it. My goal is bring awareness about invasive species and how harmful they are to not only other species but us as well. The more you research on invasive species the more you will see why people are trying so hard to stop them while wondering why others are not. So please, if you can, do a little research on your own after watching this video. After all, what’s considered invasive here might not be in another state or country elsewhere.

Emerald Ash Borer – Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire, is an exotic beetle that was discovered in southeastern Michigan near Detroit in the summer of 2002. The adult beetles nibble on ash foliage but cause little damage. The larvae (the immature stage) feed on the inner bark of ash trees, disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients. Emerald ash borer probably arrived in the United States on solid wood packing material carried in cargo ships or airplanes originating in its native Asia.
