Professor Frederick Khachik, Ph.D., NPUSA Science Advisor

Many of the accomplishments of Professor Frederick Khachik, Ph.D., recommended him to NPUSA (NP in the USA). However, prominent among those many achievement are his two patents for the isolation and purification of Lutein from marigold flowers!

Because of his specific competence in an area of research so important to NP—the Lutein in the NP supplement Super Lutein is derived from marigolds—he has been retained as Scientific Advisor to the launch of NP in North America.

Dr. Khachik says of his appointment:

“I have dedicated decades of my professional life to the study of Carotenoids, and I am convinced that nutritional supplementation through Carotenoids such as Lutein provides the body with some of the best nutritional support available to strengthen the structure and support the healthy function of the body in a number of important, life-­‐sustaining areas. Professor Khachik received his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland. Since then, Dr. Khachik’s research has resulted in identification of more than 50 carotenoids in fruits and vegetables, 34 carotenoids and 9 metabolites in human plasma and breast milk. Additionally, he has established the existence of several mechanisms by which carotenoids may prevent chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and age-related diseases.

Following work at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. Khachik accepted an appointment to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Maryland as senior research scientist, where he has collaborated to establish the bioavailability and metabolism of Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Lypocene in the prevention of cancer.

Collaborating with Professor Nishino and his team at Kyoto University School of Medicine, they demonstrated the cancer chemopreventive properties of dietary carotenoids such as Lyopcene and Lutein.

Dr. Khachik has published 63 peer reviewed articles, 18 book chapters, and been awarded 12 patents. Between 1990 to present he has presented more than 100 lectures on carotenoids at national and international conferences.
