[What is Epimedium?]

Epimedium extract is a popular aphrodisiac supplement and herbal sexual performance enhancer.It has a long history of traditional use in China for the alleviation of erectile dysfunction and for improving libido and fertility.

Also known as Horny Goat Weed, this supplement supposedly got its name after a farmer noticed that his flock of goats were particularly aroused after eating flowers of a specific type. These Epimedium flowers contain icariin, which is a natural compound that increases blood flow to sexual organs and promotes sex drive. Phytosome được tạo nên từ dịch chiết đã được chuẩn hóa của dược liệu chứa hoạt chất thiên nhiên với phospholipid bằng cách tạo liên kết giữa hoạt chất chứa trong dịch chiết với phospholipid-một hợp chất tự nhiên có nguồn gốc từ đậu nành hoặc trứng. Phytosome là một dạng công nghệ bào chế mới có ưu việt cho dòng sản phẩm chiết xuất từ thảo dược, vì nâng cao khả năng hấp thu và hiệu quả điều trị tốt hơn so với dạng bào chế thông thường.

Phần lớn các hoạt chất thiên nhiên chiết xuất từ dược liệu có tác dụng điều trị là nhóm flavonoid và terpenoid — có cấu trúc polyphenol (ví dụ anthocyanidin trong cây Việt quất, Leucocianidin trong hạt nho, catechin –EGCG có trong cây chè xanh, Silymarin trong cây Kế, Ginko biloba, Curcumin trong củ nghệ, Rutin và Quercetin có trong hoa hòe…). Bằng cách này, các polyphenol chiết xuất từ dược liệu từ bản chất là không tan trong các dung môi hữu cơ trở thành phức hợp với phospholipid và dễ tan trong dung môi hữu cơ và cả trong lipid. Bằng thực nghiệm tiền lâm sàng tiến hành trên động vật thí nghiệm và lâm sàng trên người tình nguyện, người ta đã chứng minh rằng dạng phức hợp có tác dụng rất tốt so với dạng không tạo phức hợp có trong các dịch chiết bình thường.

Về mặt cấu trúc, liposome và phytosome có cấu tạo tương tự như sau: bao gồm nhiều phân tử phospholipid ( ở dạng màng kép) tạo thành hình cầu bao quanh 1 thân nước bên trong. Với liposome thì phospholipid ở dạng không có liên kết với hoạt chất, còn ở dạng phytosome thì có sự liên kết giữa phospholipid với hoạt chất (flavonoid, tanin, terpenoid).
