[What is Phytosterol?]

Phytosterols are compounds found in plants that resemble cholesterol. The National Institutes of Heath report that there are over 200 different phytosterols, and the highest concentrations of phytosterols are found naturally in vegetable oils, beans and nuts. Their benefits are so recognized that foods are being fortified with phytosterols. At the supermarket, you may see orange juice or margarine advertising phytosterol contents. One of the contributing factors in the aging of the skin is the breakdown and loss of collagen — the main component in connective skin tissue — and sun exposure is a major contributor to the problem. As the body ages, it is not able to produce collagen as it once did. The German medical journal “Der Hautarzt” reports a study in which various topical preparations were tested on skin for 10 days. The topical treatment that showed anti-aging benefits to the skin was the one that contained phytosterols and other natural fats. It is reported that phytosterols not only stopped the slow-down of collagen production that can be caused by the sun, it actually encouraged new collagen production.

Ana Luisa destaca que estudos realizados com o extrato de Ginkgo Biloba, e também de acordo com a indicação da maioria dos fabricantes, é recomendado o consumo de 40 mg 3 vezes por dia, ou 60 a 80 mg 2 vezes por dia”, diz.

Efeitos colaterais da Ginkgo Biloba

Ana Luisa destaca que a Ginkgo Biloba tem baixa taxa de efeitos adversos. “Contudo, quando esses ocorrem, costumam se apresentar na forma de náuseas, dor de cabeça, diarreia e dores abdominais”, diz.

Além disso, de acordo com a médica nutróloga, alguns pontos devem ser levados em consideração:

Por falta de estudos clínicos, a substância não é recomendada a gestantes.
Outro ponto importante é consumir sempre com orientação. Existem correntes que entendem que o uso prolongado sem uma pausa pode causar sobrecarga de rins e fígado, portanto, o acompanhamento médico é sempre importante.
Devido à ação inibitória sobre as plaquetas, pode aumentar o risco de sangramento em algumas situações, por isso, pacientes que serão submetidos a procedimentos cirúrgicos devem informar ao seu médico quanto ao uso da substância.
Clarissa reforça que, apesar de relativamente segura, a Ginkgo biloba deve ser utilizada com cautela como qualquer outro medicamento. “As reações adversas raramente podem ocorrer em aproximadamente 5% dos casos e consistem em distúrbios gastrointestinais, como por exemplo, náusea e mal-estar abdominal. Menos frequentes, podem ser observados efeitos colaterais como tontura e queda de pressão arterial, vertigem, cefaleia ou ainda aumento da sensibilidade da pele, causando alergias ou reações cutâneas”, diz.

“Pelo maior risco de causar sangramentos e hemorragias e, considerando a possibilidade em potencializar o efeito de medicamentos anticoagulantes e antiplaquetários, orienta-se a suspensão da Ginkgo Biloba antes da realização de procedimentos cirúrgicos”, acrescenta a nutricionista.

Contraindicações da Ginkgo Biloba

De acordo com Clarissa, a planta é contraindicada para pacientes hemofílicos (distúrbio que afeta a coagulação do sangue) e, por falta de evidências quanto à segurança, orienta-se a administração criteriosa sob rígido controle clínico em lactantes (mulheres que estão amamentando), gestantes, bem como no público pediátrico.

Ana Luisa acrescenta que há relatos de que a Ginkgo Biloba interfira na ação de medicações anticonvulcionantes. “Então, pessoas que fazem uso desse tipo de medicação devem consultar um médico antes de seu uso”, finaliza a médica.
