[Function]

Grapes (Vitis vinifera) have been heralded for their medicinal and nutritional value for thousands of years. Egyptians ate grapes a very long time back, and several ancient Greek philosophers spoke about the healing power of grapes — usually in the form of wine. European folk healers made an ointment from the sap of grapevines to treat skin and eye diseases. Grape leaves were used to stop bleeding, inflammation, and pain, such as the kind brought on by hemorrhoids. Unripe grapes were used to treat sore throats, and dried grapes (raisins) were used for constipation and thirst. Round, ripe, sweet grapes were used to treat a range of health problems including cancer, cholera, smallpox, nausea, eye infections, and skin, kidney, and liver diseases.

Grape seed extracts are industrial derivatives from whole grape seeds that have a great concentration of vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid and phenolic OPCs. The typical commercial opportunity of extracting grape seed constituents has been for chemicals known as polyphenols having antioxidant activity in vitro.

The Chinese have been drinking green tea for centuries and it is now well known that green tea improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of cancer and helps with weight loss. Green tea comes from the same plant as black tea, but is harvested at a younger age. It is consumed “fresh”, while black tea is consumed roasted. Green tea is thus less processed and retains more of its nutrients and antioxidants than black tea.
The high levels of the potent antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in green tea help fight free radical damage, which is associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Green tea helps to lower total cholesterol levels by lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol and inhibiting blood clot formation. A recent study found that green tea extract helps to deliver greater energy expenditure and fat metabolism, so it helps with weight loss. Drinking three cups of green tea a day gives antioxidant protection. But green tea contains about 20 grams of caffeine per serve, so be careful if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

Compressed tea (such as Pu-erh) is produced for convenience in transport, storage, and ageing. It can usually be stored longer without spoilage than loose leaf tea.

Compressed tea is prepared by loosening leaves from the cake using a small knife, and steeping the extracted pieces in water. During the Tang dynasty, as described by Lu Yu, compressed tea was ground into a powder, combined with hot water, and ladled into bowls, resulting in a “frothy” mixture.[115] In the Song dynasty, the tea powder would instead be whisked with hot water in the bowl. Although no longer practiced in China today, the whisking method of preparing powdered tea was transmitted to Japan by Zen Buddhist monks, and is still used to prepare matcha in the Japanese tea ceremony.[116]

Compressed tea was the most popular form of tea in China during the Tang dynasty.[117] By the beginning of the Ming dynasty, it had been displaced by loose leaf tea.[118] It remains popular, however, in the Himalayan countries and Mongolian steppes. In Mongolia, tea bricks were ubiquitous enough to be used as a form of currency. Among Himalayan peoples, compressed tea is consumed by combining it with yak butter and salt to produce butter tea.[119]
