There are many herbal and homeopathic remedies that have been around for years, even centuries. Many want to dismiss them as folk medicine or quack cures, but long before modern medicine was around, these folk remedies kept many people healthy. I am one who feels both worlds can coexist. Modern medicine is good, but don’t have all the answers, homeopathic remedies have their place in our health world as well.

Yellow root has been used in folk medicine for many years. It has been used to treat mouth infections and sore throat, diabetes, and even to induce childbirth. Some cultures view it as an antibiotic, immunostimulant, anticonvulsant, sedative. Still others have used for high blood pressure, and a laxative.

Some may call yellow root, goldenseal or vice versa. Actually they are 2 totally different plants that look nothing alike, but have some of the same properties. So if you say goldenseal, you are more than likely from the north, while yellow root is more often used in the south. Much like those in the north call a soft drink “soda” and those in the south call it “pop.”

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, yellow root has become one of the most popular herbs in the United States. Another very interesting claim I found for yellow root is that it will mask any illegal drugs in your urine causing a false negative. But if you are looking for something to do that, I would not suggest yellow root, it has been proven highly ineffective for that purpose.

So, is yellow root good for diabetes? As a cure, no. Will it hurt you, probably not. It does effect different people in different ways. I see no benefit for this herb for the sole purpose of aiding in your control of diabetes.
