The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define a global consensus around universal development goals to be met over the 2015-30 period, to which India is a key signatory. The 17 SDGs include an explicit stand-alone Urban SDG 11 (Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable) that IIHS helped define. This is supported by SDG 6 (Ensure access to water and sanitation for all), SDG 7 (Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all), and SDG 13 (Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts).

The SDGs provide a universal development framework committed to leaving no one behind, involving all people, especially the most vulnerable; a mandate to provide solutions for both rural and urban regions; and a crucial connection between the natural and built environments.

The Urban Policy Dialogues 2016 will focus on six sectors: Housing, Water and Sanitation, Energy, Land, Climate Change, and Risk and Resilience. Across these sectors, we will deliberate on our existing policies and the SDG targets, and explore evidence-based frameworks to track progress towards achieving India’s development goals.
