Green tea has been found to offer protection from cancer and heart disease.

The Chinese have been drinking green tea for centuries and it is now well known that green tea improves cardiovascular health, reduces the risk of cancer and helps with weight loss. Green tea comes from the same plant as black tea, but is harvested at a younger age. It is consumed “fresh”, while black tea is consumed roasted. Green tea is thus less processed and retains more of its nutrients and antioxidants than black tea.
The high levels of the potent antioxidant EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in green tea help fight free radical damage, which is associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Green tea helps to lower total cholesterol levels by lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol and inhibiting blood clot formation. A recent study found that green tea extract helps to deliver greater energy expenditure and fat metabolism, so it helps with weight loss. Drinking three cups of green tea a day gives antioxidant protection. But green tea contains about 20 grams of caffeine per serve, so be careful if you’re sensitive to caffeine.
