GINKGO BILOBA HELPS IMPROVE MEMORY

Ginkgo Biloba, Brain & Memory

Ginkgo is the name given to the herbal extract obtained from the leaves of one of the oldest tree species alive, Ginkgo Biloba.

Ginkgo contains two sets of important phyto-chemicals known as bilobalides and ginkgolides. These two classes of compounds have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which can be useful for protecting brain cells and structures from damage.

However, ginkgo provides more benefits for brain cells. It improves blood flow to the brain and it is known to prevent the accumulation of beta-amyloids on brain tissues.

Since the amyloid proteins are implicated in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, ginkgo can definitely improve cognitive function and memory.

In one study, a daily dose of 240 mg of the standardized extract of ginkgo was found effective for improving memory and learning in patients suffering from dementia.

Ginkgo is also used for conditions that seem to be due-to reduced blood flow in the brain, especially in older people. These conditions include memoryloss, difficulty in concentrating and mood-disturbances.

While ginkgo has the active phyto-chemicals to help improve memory, it seems that it requires long-term supplementation to work.

Supplementation should be started well before the first signs of neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Some studies have found that in healthy people, ginkgo might modestly boost memory and cognitive speed. Other studies have not found a benefit.

PRECAUTIONS

The Mayo Clinic-notes that Ginkgo Billoba is generally well tolerated. However, due to Ginkgo Billoba’s properties in increasing blood flow, the herb should be used with caution by patients currently taking anticoagulant therapy and discontinued at least two days prior to some dental or surgical procedures.

Ginkgo Billoba is not recommended for children under the age of 12 or for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

SOURCES

Ginkgo Biloba is one of the prime ingredients that is helpful in boosting brain power, and as such, is found in a number of supplements which aim to promote the healthful functioning of the brain.

It can be found in health food and vitamin stores in several forms.
