How Cranberries Protect Against Urinary Tract Infections
Experience has taught us that cranberries have something in them that helps people with urinary tract infections. Many people believe they work by coating bacteria in a way the prevents them from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract so they just wash out.
New data published in the Canadian Journal of Microbiology in July of 2013 demonstrated that cranberry powder can inhibit the ability of Proteus mirabilis (frequently involved in complicated infections) to spread through flagellar activity. A genetic analysis showed that cranberry decreases the gene that encodes the bacteria’s flagellum (tail that propells it). They also found that it reduced its production of urease, an enzyme that contributes to the virulence of infections.
One of the active ingredients in cranberry is the non-metabolizable sugar, d-mannose. Many nutrition-based MDs use a teaspoon three times a day to deal with urinary tract infections.
Another study on the subject showed that cranberry enriched silicone substrates impaired the spread of infections. It may be useful to use this substance to reduce the risk of infections from catheters, pacemakers, and other implantable devices in the human body.
