My favorite past time in Vanuatu – kava drinking, of course. Kava is a native beverage made from the roots of a pepper plant. Kava drinking in Vanuatu is the equivalent to going to a bar in America. The kava relaxes both body and mind. Here, I am drinking kava at the Bamboo nakamal in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Next to me is my dear friend, Kaitip. My friend Abel is filming me. I spent most of my evenings drinking kava at this nakamal while I was in Vanuatu in the summer of 2006. Ni-Van men traditionally drink kava every evening. The green kava at the Bamboo nakamal was consistently strong.
