Resveratrol is a phytoalexin, a type of antibiotic produced naturally by plants that are under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi, as well as UV exposure or physical injury. It has potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties and is widely renowned for its capacity to increase cellular longevity. The foundation for these claims was built upon the discovery made by David Sinclair, PhD, at Harvard University, who established that resveratrol has an impact on the activity of the sirtuin gene family, also known as “longevity genes” – a group of 7 genes associated with the ageing process. Sirtuin is often referred to as a ‘protector of cells’ as it assists cells with their self-repair when they are close to destruction. When the cell hesitates between the struggle or surrender, sirtuin steps in and persuades it to fight on and to repair itself. Without the sirtuin, the cell would have died and as cells die, one ages.

Resveratrol naturally occurs in two isomer forms – cis and trans. Of the two, it is the trans isomer that has been shown in numerous studies to be the most bioactive and beneficial form of resveratrol.
