Oaking home made wine with toasted oak sawdust
I bought the oak chips on Amazon, $9 for a pound. They come already toasted. After grinding in a coffee grinder, they come out as sawdust, and have huge surface area. I could taste the oak flavors in this wine after only 9 days of fermenting.
This is the Fontana Cabernet Sauvignon kit, plus a supplemental box of Winexpert Red Grape Concentrate – 1 Liter, both purchased on Amazon. Initial SG was 1.098. Today’s racking, 9 days later measured at 1.000. I expect it to get to about 0.994 in the next week for a final ABV of 13.65%, pretty good for a cab.
