On a hot, sunny Sunday last month, Hultgren and a few other hikers descended into the Tar Creek area of the Sespe Wilderness, scrambling over rocks and rappelling a cliff in the hopes of ridding the creek of tamarisk, an invasive plant that can ruin an ecosystem.
