The St John’s wort plant is one of the oldest herbal remedies for nerve related disorders and can be found growing wild in many climates all over the world. It has most recently received widespread attention in the last 40-50 years as an herbal remedy for helping with mild depressive states. Acting as a nervine and sedative for the nerves, some of active ingredients responsible for these effects include hyperforin and hypericin, both of which increase extracellular levels of various neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. These constituents are known to improve cognitive processes and are especially beneficial as mood enhancers. Learn more about how to wildcraft your own St John’s as well as how to make your own oils and tinctures.
