Under-sowing red clover in organic winter wheat
We have just managed to grab the dry weekend to under-sow red clover about 100 hectares of red clover on our own land and a further 50 hectares on our contact farms. These fields are at the end of their cropping rotation and are now going back into 18 months of fertility building in the clover let. The let will either be cut and mulched and then ploughed back into the soil adding organic matter or be grazed by sheep. The clover can fix around 250 kg of nitrogen per hectare with is the most important nutrient for achieving good yields from our following cash crops. Clover is also very good at adding organic matter to the soil because of the mulch that we plough back in from cutting it, but also for improving soil structure with is huge root system.
