Your Liver and the Epigallocatechin-3 in Green Tea
Hey fitness fanatics!
Our topic today is one we have discussed a bit before: Green tea, and its effect on you. There is strong evidence now that green tea extract can in fact injure your liver. The US Food and Drug Administration has been dealing with multiple complaints which link green tea extract to liver impairment, and studies show that a particular chemical may be to blame. Epigallocatechin-3, or EGCG, has been linked to liver damage in many studies. Researchers do mention that obese people may be more susceptible because their overall metabolic health is already poor, but that doesn’t mean it’s harmless for someone at a healthy weight. To reduce any worry, only take it with meals. It’s important to note that green tea extract comes in various forms (powder, liquid, capsule, tablet) and it is not the same as drinking tea.
