[What is Curcuma Longa?]

Turmeric is an herbaceous plant known scientifically as Curcuma longa. It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, which includes ginger. Tumeric has rhizomes rather than true roots, which are the primary source of commercial value for this plant. Tumeric originates from southwest India, where it has been a stable of Siddha medicine for thousands of years. It is also a common spice in Indian cuisine and is often used as flavoring for Asian mustards.

Our body can live with an acceptable level of toxicity without much harm done. When the threshold of toxicity is exceeded, problems will arise, ranging from a minor skin rash to a serious one like cancer. However, it’s difficult to know where the threshold is until something happens.

Toxic substances are absorbed into our body through the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the general environment we are exposed to everyday. Most toxins are not fatal because the amounts absorbed are usually small. Furthermore, our body is constantly cleansing them out to keep the accumulation in check.

The prescription given here is not strong enough to cure serious diseases like cancer all by itself. Moreover, no Chinese herbs are substance specific, that is, they are not known to be able to eliminate specific toxins or chemicals from the body. However, this prescription is good for regular use as a general cleansing treatment, or as a way to keep the toxicity level in the body well below threshold.

This prescription should achieve three things: cleanse the blood, assist the liver in its cleansing function, and assist the kidneys in expelling toxins via urination. The following herbs are used:

Rhodiola rosea (commonly golden root, rose root, roseroot, western roseroot, Aaron’s rod, arctic root, king’s crown, lignum rhodium, orpin rose) is a perennial flowering plant in the family Crassulaceae. It grows in cold regions of the world, including much of the Arctic, the mountains of Central Asia, scattered in eastern North America from Baffin Island to the mountains of North Carolina, and mountainous parts of Europe, such as the Alps, Pyrenees, and Carpathian Mountains, Scandinavia, Iceland, Great Britain and Ireland. It grows on sea cliffs and on mountains at altitudes up to 2280 meters. Several shoots grow from the same thick root. Shoots may reach 5 to 35 cm in height. R. rosea is dioecious – having separate female and male plants.
