Brief Introduction
Salicin is a naturally occurring compound found in the bark of several species of trees, primarily North American in origin, that are from the willow, poplar, and aspen families. White willow, from whose Latin name, Salix alba, the term salicin is derived, is the most well known source of this compound, but it is found in a number of other trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants as well being synthesized commercially. It is a member of the glucoside family of chemicals and is used as an analgesic and antipyretic. Salicin is used as a precursor for the synthesis of salicylic acid and acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin.
A colorless, crystalline solid in its pure form, salicin has the chemical formula C13H18O7. Part of its chemical structure is equivalent to the sugar glucose, meaning it is classified as a glucoside. It is soluble, but not strongly so, in water and alcolhol. Salicin has a bitter taste and is a natural analgesic and antipyretic, or fever reducer. In large quantities, it can be toxic, and overdoses may lead to liver and kidney damage. In its raw form, it may be mildly irritating to skin, respiratory organs, and eyes.

- It is true that supplements can be hard on your liver simply due to the fact that they are processed powdered forms of nutrition. This makes your liver work harder to sort out and filter all of the nutrients. The harder you make your liver work, the more wear and tear potentially there is.
- For this reason, there is a balance that needs to be considered when adding supplements to your diet. Because of your protein shakes and powdered drinks, it is even more important to get your daily fiber intake. You should aim for 30 grams of fiber every day.
- To give you an idea of how much this is, one large apple only has about 5.4 grams, a bell pepper has 2 grams. Clearly many solid foods need to be consumed to reach 30 grams of fiber.
- Staying within the recommended dosage is also important when taking supplements. In many cases, the ones who end up injuring their liver are the ones who abuse the daily intake of their supplements. This is especially true when it comes to pre-workout supplements.
- Basically if you stay within the daily recommended dosages and be sure to eat an abundance of solid foods delivering 30 grams of fiber each day, safe nutritional supplements should not hurt your liver. Some may in fact enhance your liver health when you consider supplements such as milk thistle and natural astaxanthin.
