El 5 HTP, es el precursor de la serotonina directo, y es producido por el organismo partiendo del aminoácido de origen natural L-triptófano o LT.
El 5HTP no es un componente que se encuentre en cantidades significativas de la dieta cotidiana, y aunque puede conseguirse a partir de alimentos ricos en LT, se ha observado que el consumo de dichos alimentos no aumenta sus niveles de forma significativa.
El reciente interés por saber las propiedades de este nutriente, es debido a que aumenta los niveles de serotonina en el cerebro, es un neurotransmisor importante para el normal funcionamiento del sistema nervioso y del cerebro.
La serotonina interviene en distintos procesos fisiológicos y afecta una amplia gama de funciones entre las que se encuentran el estado de ánimo, el control del dolor, el apetito, el sueño y mucho más.

Efectos Secundarios.
Si se encuentra en tratamiento que inhiben el MAO, como antidepresivos o está recibiendo tratamiento para enfermedad de Parkinson, es importante que consulte a su médico antes de decidir probar el 5 HTP.
Hay dudas acerca de un problema posible de seguridad ya que el 5-HTP interactua con carbidopa, la cual se usa para el mal de Parkinson. Ha habido diversos informes que arrojan que el tomar en combinación el carbidopa y el 5-HTP puede conducir a cambios negativos en la piel como la esclerodermia.
Está la preocupación latente de que al tomar suplementos de 5HTP puede que algunas personas desarrollen mialgia y el síndrome de eosinofilia, una condición que se caracteriza por sensibilizar los músculos y ocasionar anomalías en la sangre.
Ha llegado a creerse que este síndrome puede ser ocasionado por un ingrediente contaminante y tóxico, que haya estado presente de forma accidental en algunos productos de 5-HTP, pero no hay evidencia suficiente para afirmarlo.
Se prefiere evitar el consumo de suplementos de 5-HTP hasta que exista más evidencia y sustento confiable de investigación.
Otros posibles efectos secundarios que se pueden desarrollar tras la ingesta de 5 HTP incluyen dolor estomacal, acidez, náuseas, diarrea, vómito, problemas sexuales, somnolencia y problemas musculares.

Precauciones.
Cirugía: La ingesta de 5-HTP antes de someterse a una cirugía podría aumentar demasiado en el cerebro los niveles de serotonina, la cual cosa podría producir efectos secundarios graves, en los que se incluyen problemas cardíacos, ansiedad y escalofríos. Es de importancia dejar de tomar el 5HTP mínimo dos semanas antes de producirse una cirugía y consultar con su médico antes de la intervención.
Síndrome de Down: Existen incidencias en algunas personas con síndrome de Down de convulsiones que han tomado 5 HTP, por lo que es mejor que eviten su consumo.
Embarazo y lactancia: Se desconoce el efecto que el 5-HTP pueda ocasionar en ambos casos por lo que se recomienda evitar su ingesta.
Niños: No se conoce ni hay investigaciones que demuestren que es seguro en los niños. Su recomendación es no dárselos.
