[What is Andrographis?]

Andrographis paniculata is a bitter tasting annual plant, referred to as the “King of Bitters.” It has white-purple flowers and it is native to Asia and India where it has been valued for centuries for its numerous medicinal benefits. Over the past decade, andrographis has become popular in America where it is often used alone and in combination with other herbs for a variety of health purposes.

[How does it work?]

According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the active ingredient in andrographis is andrographolides. Due to the andrographolides, andrographis has potent anti-inflammatory and antimalarial properties. It also has antimicrobial properties, meaning it can help to fight off and prevent infections from harmful microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. In addition, andrographis is a powerful antioxidant and it can help to prevent free radical induced damage to your cells and DNA

Cold and Flu

Scientists have discovered that andrographis helps to boost the immune system by stimulating the body’s production of antibodies and macrophages, which are large white blood cells that scavenge harmful microorganisms. It is taken for both the prevention and treatment of the common cold, and it is often referred to as Indian echinacea. It might help lessen the severity of cold symptoms such as sleeplessness, fever, nasal drainage and sore throat.

Cancer, Viral Infections and Heart Health

Andrographis may also help to prevent and treat cancer, and preliminary studies done in test tubes found that extracts of andrographis help to treat stomach, skin, prostate and breast cancer. Due to the herb’s antiviral properties, andrographis is used to treat herpes and it is also currently being studied as a treatment for Aids and HIV as well. Andrographis also promotes heart health and can help to prevent the formation of blood clots as well as to dissolve already formed blood clots. In addition, the herb relaxes smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels and thereby helps to reduce high blood pressure.

Additional Benefits

Andrographis is used to promote gallbladder and digestive health. It also helps to support and strengthen the liver and it is used in combination with other herbs in several Ayurvedic formulations to treat liver disorders. Finally, andrographis extracts taken orally have been found to help neutralize the poisonous effects of snake venom.

Dosage and Precautions

The therapeutic dose of andrographis is 400 mg, twice daily, for up to 10 days. Although andrographis is considered safe in humans, the NYU Langone Medical Center warns that animal studies suggest that it may impair fertility. Andrographis may cause unwanted side effects such as headaches, fatigue, allergic reactions, nausea, diarrhea, altered taste and pain in the lymph nodes. It may also interact with certain medications and as with any supplement you should consult your health care practitioner before taking the herb.

นักวิทยาศาสตร์อเมริกันพบว่า เม็ดเลือดขาว Th17 สามารถป้องกันและจัดการกับเซลล์มะเร็งได้ และได้มีความพยายามในการสร้าง Th17 ในปริมาณมากเพื่อใช้รักษามะเร็งในผู้ป่วย แต่วิธีการรักษาที่มาตรฐานยังอยู่ในระหว่างการพัฒนา เพื่อให้เกิดประสิทธิภาพสูงสุดและมีผลข้างเคียงน้อยสุด จากการทดสอบในอาสาสมัครโดยศูนย์วิจัยเทคโนโลยีชีวการแพทย์มหาวิทยาลัย เชียงใหม่ พบว่าแคปซูลการ์ซิเนีย 4 แคปซูลต่อวันต่อเนื่อง 15 วัน th17 เพิ่มขึ้น 500% และ Th1 เพิ่มขึ้น 200% อย่างปลอดภัยไร้ผลข้างเคียง Th17 ที่เพิ่มขึ้นจึงควรจะเกิดประโยชน์ในการยกระดับคุณภาพชีวิตของผู้ป่วยมะเร็ง ได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ โดยไม่เกิดผลข้างเคียงใดๆเลย นอกจากนี้ Th1 ที่เพิ่มขึ้นก็จะเพิ่มประสิทธิภาพเม็ดเลือดขาวและฆ่าในการจัดการเซลมะเร็ง ที่เพิ่มขึ้นได้อีกด้วย ส่วนน้ำมังคุด BIM ซึ่งประกอบด้วย สารในปริมาณมาตรฐาน 4 กลุ่ม คือ 1.สาร GM-1 ที่สามารถฆ่าเซลล์มะเร็งได้ โดยการทำลายผนังเซลล์ 2. alpha- hydroxyl acid ซึ่งดักจับธาตุเหล็กอิสระที่เซลล์มะเร็งต้องใช้ในการเจริญเติบโตเร็วกว่าเซลล์ปกติในร่างกาย 3. alpha- hydroxycitric acid ที่ระงับการสร้างไขมัน ซึ่งเป็นส่วนประกอบหนึ่งของเยื่อบุผนังเซลล์มะเร็ง 4. สาร polysaccharides ซึ่งป้องกันไม่ให้เซลล์มะเร็งเกาะติดอยู่กับเซลล์ปกติของร่างกาย และยังสามารถกำจัดเซลล์มะเร็งได้ด้วย ดังนั้น การใช้น้ำมังคุด BIM ควบคู่กับการซีเนียแคปซูลจะช่วยให้มีประสิทธิภาพในการดูแลผู้ป่วยมะเร็งด้วย กลไกที่ต่างกัน วิธีการใช้ที่ดีที่สุด คือ ใช้น้ำมังคุด BIM 1 ซอง ก่อนอาหารเช้า แคปซูลการ์ซีเนีย 3 แคปซูล ก่อนอาหารกลางวัน, 3 แคปซูล ก่อนอาหารเย็น, และ 3 แคปซูล ก่อนนอน จากการทดสอบที่ศูนย์วิจัยเทคโนโลยีชีวการแพทย์มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่พบว่า อาสาสมัครที่ใช้น้ำมังคุด 1 ซอง (300 ml) ทุกวันต่อเนื่อง 15 วัน มีปริมาณ Th1 เด่นกว่า Th2 ซึ่งทำให้มีความสามารถในการเพิ่มภูมิต้านทานต่อสิ่งแปลกปลอม เช่น เชื้อรา แบคทีเรีย ไวรัส และมะเร็ง ในขณะเดียวกัน T regulator มีปริมาณมากขึ้น ซึ่งทำให้สามารถควบคุม Th1, Th2 และ Th17 ไม่ให้มีมากเกินจนเกิดอาการแพ้ภูมิตัวเอง ด้วยเหตุผลดังกล่าว การใช้แคปซูลการ์ซิเนียและน้ำมังคุดบิม จึงควรใช้ในเวลาต่างกันเพื่อไม่ให้ T regulator ที่เพิ่มขึ้นจากการใช้น้ำมังคุดบิม ไปลดปริมาณ Th1 และ Th17 การใช้น้ำมังคุดบิมคู่กับแคปซูลการ์ซิเนียจะช่วยให้ผู้ป่วยมะเร็งที่มี อาการแพ้ภูมิตัวเองอยู่แล้วจะสามารถลดอาการแพ้ภูมิตัวเองจากประมาณ T regulator ที่เพิ่มขึ้นจากการใช้น้ำมังคุด ดังนั้นผู้ป่วยเหล่นี้จึงควรอย่างยิ่งที่จะต้องใช้ผลิตภัณฑ์ทั้งสองคู่กัน แต่ต้องใช้ต่างเวลากันประมาณ 2 ชั่วโมง

QAAFI Science Seminar

ABSTRACT

Plant cell walls and associated polysaccharides (a.k.a. dietary fibre) play a pivotal role in the digestion of a healthy diet, mostly as the defining structural characteristic of whole grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Credible hypotheses can be constructed to link cell wall properties of these plant-based foods to reduction in risk factors for major non-communicable diseases.

The physical properties of plant cell wall polysaccharide components relevant to digestive tract functionality can be grouped into (i) bulk structuring, (ii) transport barriers, and (iii) molecular binding. Examples of each type of functionality from both in vitro and in vivo studies will be presented.

The conventional sub-division of dietary fibre into soluble and insoluble types disguises the reality that the physical form of plant cell walls in digesta is typically intermediate between the extremes of dissolved polymers and non-swollen solid particles which are often used to exemplify soluble and insoluble fibre fractions. An alternative method of categorising dietary fibres is proposed based on a combination of particle/molecule size and effective density.

About Prof. Mike Gidley

Prof. Gidley obtained a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Chemistry, at the University of London in 1977 and went on to complete his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge in 1982.

Before establishing CNAFS in 2003 (a joint initiative between UQ and the Queensland Government), Prof. Gidley worked for Unilever Research in the United Kingdom for more than 20 years, beginning as a research scientist and culminating as the Group Leader for Plant-based Foods and Ingredients.

Prof. Gidley’s major research interest is the linking of plant molecular structures to macroscopic properties with relevance to plant-based food properties. In particular, Prof. Gidley is interested in investigating polysaccharide assemblies such as plant cell walls (as part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Plant Cell Walls and starch granules, particularly the way these structures are assembled in nature and then disassembled during manufacturing and later during digestion.

Prof. Gidley’s field of research involves the use of spectroscopic, microscopic and materials analyses of natural materials and model systems. Insights into structure-property relationships are obtained and can then be used to provide targets for raw materials and processes with enhanced food and nutritional properties.
