[What is Kava?]

Kava, also known as piper methysticum, kava kava, and ‘awa, is a small shrub native to the islands in the South Pacific. The root and stems are made into a non-alcoholic, psychoactive beverage that has been used socially and ceremonially for hundreds of years in Hawaii, Fiji, and Tonga.

Kava is traditionally prepared by placing ground root and stem into a porous sack, submerging in water, and squeezing the juice into a large, carved, wooden bowl. Coconut half-shell cups are dipped and filled — punch bowl style. After drinking a cup or two a feeling of heightened attention combined with relaxation begins to come on. Although it is soothing, it is unlike alcohol in that thoughts remain clear. The flavor is largely inoffensive, but some find that it takes getting used to; it really depends on your preference for earthy flavors.

[Kava is Safe to Use]

The safe and effective benefits of kava to relieve symptoms of anxiety were also supported in a meta-analysis, a systematic statistical review of seven human clinical trials published in 2000 in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, and again in a similar critical review in 2001. The reviews did not find significant adverse effects related to liver toxicity.

In conclusion, the liver is affected by many substances, including prescription and non- prescription drugs, as well as alcohol, which is a major cause of liver damage. We must be aware that herbs are potent medicines, to be treated with the appropriate respect regarding potential interactions and toxicity, including to the liver. On the other hand, Kava kava’s margin of safety far surpasses that of it’s pharmaceutical equivalent.

  • This is my absolute favorite hummus to date….It is lemony, garlicky, spicy and delish :) I serve this with the “Engine 2″ Crackers/Crispbread. Enjoy!

    1 Tb. Tahini
1 cup white beans, about 1/2 of a 15 oz. can (Cannellini Beans), rinsed and strained
    1-2 garlic cloves
2 Tb. lemon juice (if using less lemon juice, you can then add more water to desired consistency)
    zest of 1/2 lemon
    1/2 tsp. salt
    ground black pepper
1/2 tsp. Extra Hot Chili Powder (I get this at the Indian supermarket) or you can use Cayenne pepper or Paprika instead
1/4 tsp. Turmeric powder (I get this at the Indian supermarket) this is only for color
2 Tb. water (or 1 Tb. water + 1 Tb. EVOO if still cooking with oil)
pinch of finely chopped fresh or frozen rosemary leaves (I have not tried it with dried rosemary yet)

Note: Instead of rosemary you can substitute for a pinch of ground cumin

It starts out as a crazy dream: Leave everything behind and start over in a foreign place?

When travel writer Wendy Dale does exactly that, turning a far-fetched idea into a way-one plane ticket, she finds herself in a Third World country much stranger than she ever imagined. Llama meat is a dietary staple, coca leaves are chewed as often as Chiclets, and the task of hiring an electrician or maid — even a witch — means simply picking someone out from the lineup on the street corner. As Wendy struggles to adapt to the rhythms of her new life, she makes a host of embarrassing cultural gaffes, enough to discourage even the most experienced of world travelers.

But Wendy is not your everyday adventurer. A respected Random House travel author, she is famous for finding humor even in the worst of situations. In Bolivia, she learns that ordering “a Coke to go” means getting a soft drink poured into a plastic bag. The task of furnishing her house entails a visit to a prison — inmates earn their keep by selling handmade tables, chairs, and barbecue grills to anyone in need of a home makeover.

But there are deeper revelations as well. As Wendy attempts to make a life for herself in her adopted country, even simple challenges cause her to reflect, not only on Bolivian norms, but also on the home she left behind. Little by little, Wendy comes to terms with the fact that facing the unfamiliar may not be such a crazy idea after all. In the end, sometimes you have to give up everything you know in order to find yourself.

Livin’ Bolivian. There are moments when your life stops being just a series of events — and starts to become an adventure.
