Brief Introduction

Salicin is a naturally occurring compound found in the bark of several species of trees, primarily North American in origin, that are from the willow, poplar, and aspen families. White willow, from whose Latin name, Salix alba, the term salicin is derived, is the most well known source of this compound, but it is found in a number of other trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants as well being synthesized commercially. It is a member of the glucoside family of chemicals and is used as an analgesic and antipyretic. Salicin is used as a precursor for the synthesis of salicylic acid and acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin.

A colorless, crystalline solid in its pure form, salicin has the chemical formula C13H18O7. Part of its chemical structure is equivalent to the sugar glucose, meaning it is classified as a glucoside. It is soluble, but not strongly so, in water and alcolhol. Salicin has a bitter taste and is a natural analgesic and antipyretic, or fever reducer. In large quantities, it can be toxic, and overdoses may lead to liver and kidney damage. In its raw form, it may be mildly irritating to skin, respiratory organs, and eyes.

  • https://www.renaldiethq.com/go/lowpotassiumdiet Why and how a low potassium diet is obtainable with just a bit of education and understanding.

Foods low in potassium are recommended if a person suffers from kidney disease: the objective of this type of diet is to avoid the malfunction of the kidneys as potassium accumulates in the blood leading to very serious problems. For those who do not suffer from particular problems, potassium is recommended because it has the ability to regulate blood pressure, the muscles to function properly, check the nerve transmissions and maintain the water balance.

But when there are diseases and disorders of the kidneys, it is fundamental to monitor phosphorus also along with potassium in the diet. Also note that when there is too much potassium in the bloodstream, then it is called hyperkalemia and when there is too little, then it is said hypokalemia, causing problems in the muscles and nerves. Remember that accumulation of potassium when you suffer from any kidney disease is very dangerous because you may run into problems such as muscle cramps, abdominal, tingling lips, weakness, rhythm disorders of the heart to cardiac arrest. The recommendation is, however, not to consume more than 4,700 mg of potassium per day. In addition to foods low in potassium such as almond oil, olive oil, unsalted butter, corn starch, rice, goat cheese, some have been still always best to limit consumption. For example, sugar, spirits such as gin, brandy and beer, and carbonated beverages.

In this diet, foods low in potassium can be eaten without problems. Here is a list of foods that contain little potassium which are: water, fructose, palm oil, seed oils, lard oil, almond oil, olive oil, unsalted butter, goat cheese, corn starch. Concerning the vegetables, to decrease their amount of potassium, you have to do is to immerse the raw or frozen in water at room temperature for at least two hours before eating. Absolutely not recommended diet for people with kidney problems are spinach, mushrooms, whole wheat bread and bran, chocolate, beans, apricots, sweet fruity and fresh and dried fruit.

Among the foods that contain very little potassium and can be a good low potassium diet are torte, egg noodles boiled, the decaffeinated, orange, marmalade, margarine, animal and vegetable fats, fruit candies, instant coffee powder, long grain rice cooked, grape juice, cream liqueur coffee, papaya nectar, honey, tamarind nectar, rice drink, soft goat cheese, cranberry sauce, fruit ice cream with no added sugar, unsalted butter, berries, maraschino and daiquiri.
