[What is Rhodiola Rosea]

Rhodiola Rosea (also known as Arctic root or golden root) is a member of the family Crassulaceae, a family of plants native to the arctic regions of Eastern Siberia. Rhodiola rosea is widely distributed  in Arctic and mountainous regions throughout Europe and Asia. It grows at altitudes of 11,000 to 18,000 feet above sea level.

There are numerous animal and test tube studies showing that rhodiola has both a stimulating and a sedating effect on the central nervous system; enhance physical endurance; improves thyroid, thymus, and adrenal function; protects the nervous system, heart and liver; and has antioxidant and anticancer properties.

How Does Milk Thistle Cleanse The Body & Supports Liver Function? Although milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has been used traditionally for over 2000 years, it was not until 1968 that German scientists formally studied this plant . They discovered that milk thistle contains compounds collectively called silymarin. These are active flavonids, principally silybin with smaller concentrations of silydianin, silychristin and isosilybin.

Since the initial German research, hundreds of studies have been conducted on silymarin. It’s been found that these isomers neutralize toxins and enhance liver function.

How does milk thistle extract work ?

Silymarin is a powerful antioxidant. It scavenges free radicals that damage cells. It has been said that silymarin is at least ten times more powerful in antioxidant activity than vitamin E.

Silymarin has the ability to increase the concentration of glutathione in the liver by in excess of 35% in healthy subjects . Glutathione is an amino acid and powerful antioxidant. It’s responsible for detoxifying an array of chemicals, drugs and hormones. By boosting the availability of glutathione in the liver, silymarin helps to enhance the livers capacity for detoxification.

Silymarin helps to elevate protein synthesis in the liver . This simulates the production of new cells that replace damaged liver cells.

Silymarin prevents the production of leukotrienes . These are inflammation mediators that cause ailments such as psoriasis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and other health issues.

Milk thistle is considered so effective that it has been approved by the German Commission E Monographs as a supportive remedy for people suffering from inflammatory liver conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty infiltration as a result of alcohol and other toxins . What the studies tells us:

There are been plenty of studies investigating the use of milk thistle extract to treat liver problems. Alcohol-related liver disease has been a focal point for many studies.

In one particular clinical trial, researchers investigated the benefits of silymarin on 170 patients, of which 91 were alcoholics diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver . For 41 months, patients received 140 mg of silymarin, administered three times a day. The four year survival rate was 39 percent in the placebo group, compared with 58 percent in the milk thistle extract group. The lower death rate was particularly pronounced in the subgroup of patients with cirrhosis.

This study is particularly important for several reasons. Firstly, there were no adverse side effects reported during this study. This supports the notion that silymarin is beneficial for long-term use without causing harm. Also, the study results clearly demonstrate that silymarin helps to treat patients with liver damage as a result of alcohol abuse.

Our theme for TEDxDelMar 2011 was “A Search For A Cure”. In this talk, Dr. Richard Insel gives us his presentation entitled “Is There a Vaccine?”

Richard Insel, M.D. is Chief Scientific Officer for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Dr. Insel oversees the research strategy at the JDRF, the worlds’ largest funder of type 1 diabetes research and that is focused on curing, treating, and preventing type 1 diabetes and its complications. Prior to joining JDRF in 2003, Dr. Insel was founding Director of the Center for Human Genetics and Molecular Pediatric Disease and Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology/ Immunology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. During his 26-year affiliation with the University of Rochester Medical Center, he also held several positions including Acting Chair of Pediatrics, Director of the Strong Children’s Research Center, and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Immunology, Allergy, and Rheumatology. His research program at the University focused on immune responses to bacterial vaccines, including polysaccharide and protein-polysaccharide conjugate vaccines, and B cell immunity. Dr. Insel was a scientific co-founder and served as a member of the Board of Directors of Praxis Biologics, a biotechnology company that developed Haemophilus influenzae conjugate vaccines, which have been instrumental in eliminating invasive disease from that pathogen in the United States. He served recently on the National Advisory Allergy and Infectious Diseases Council of the National Institutes of Health and the External Advisory Panel for the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, and currently serves on the Board of the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine and the Steering Committee of TrialNet. Dr. Insel received pediatric and immunology training at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, St. Mary’s Medical College, and the Center for Disease Control and is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Allergy and Immunology.
