[What is Phytosterol?]

Phytosterols are compounds found in plants that resemble cholesterol. The National Institutes of Heath report that there are over 200 different phytosterols, and the highest concentrations of phytosterols are found naturally in vegetable oils, beans and nuts. Their benefits are so recognized that foods are being fortified with phytosterols. At the supermarket, you may see orange juice or margarine advertising phytosterol contents. After reviewing the health benefits, you may want to add phytosterol-rich foods to your diet.

Cholesterol-Lowering Benefits

The most well-known, and scientifically proven, benefit of phytosterols is their ability to help lower cholesterol. A phytosterol is a plant compound that is similar to cholesterol. A study in the 2002 issue of “Annual Review of Nutrition” explains that phytosterols actually compete for absorption with cholesterol in the digestive tract. While they prevent the absorption of regular dietary cholesterol, they themselves are not easily absorbed, which leads to a total lower cholesterol level. The cholesterol-lowering benefit does not end with a good number on your blood work report. Having lower cholesterol leads to other benefits, such as a reduced risk for heart disease, stroke and heart attacks.

Cancer Protection Benefits

Phytosterols have also been found to help protect against the development of cancer. The July 2009 issue of the” European Journal of Clinical Nutrition” offers encouraging news in the fight against cancer. Researchers at the University of Manitoba in Canada report that there is evidence that phytosterols help prevent ovarian, breast, stomach and lung cancer. Phytosterols do this by preventing the production of cancer cells, stopping the growth and spread of cells that are already in existence and actually encouraging the death of cancer cells. Their high anti-oxidant levels are believed to be one way phytosterols help fight cancer. An anti-oxidant is a compound that fights free radical damage, which is negative effects on the body produced by cells that are unhealthy.

Skin Protection Benefits

A lesser known benefit of phytosterols involves skin care. One of the contributing factors in the aging of the skin is the breakdown and loss of collagen — the main component in connective skin tissue — and sun exposure is a major contributor to the problem. As the body ages, it is not able to produce collagen as it once did. The German medical journal “Der Hautarzt” reports a study in which various topical preparations were tested on skin for 10 days. The topical treatment that showed anti-aging benefits to the skin was the one that contained phytosterols and other natural fats. It is reported that phytosterols not only stopped the slow-down of collagen production that can be caused by the sun, it actually encouraged new collagen production.

  • Berry Smoothie Bowl

Start your day with a taste of summer!

    Serves 2

    Ingredients:
    Smoothie Bowl:
2 cups (500 mL) almond milk (or other nut milk)
2 cups (500 mL) frozen blueberries
    1 ripe banana
2 Tbsp (30 mL) chia seeds
1 tsp (5 mL) maca powder
1 scoop raw vegan protein powder
Toppings: rawnola, goji berries, chia seeds, sliced banana and blueberries

    Rawnola:
2 cups (500 mL) raw oats
1/3 cup (75 mL) sunflower seeds, soaked 8 hours
1/3 cup (75 mL) pumpkin seeds, soaked 8 hours
1 cup (250 mL) chopped dried fruit (any mix of dried cherries, blueberries or
    cranberries)
    2/3 cup (150 mL) agave
1/2 cup (125 mL) pitted dates
1 Tbsp (15 mL) coconut oil
    1 vanilla bean
    Sea salt

    Method:
If you’re making the rawnola as one of your smoothie bowl toppings, you’ll want to be sure to make this first.
To make the rawnola, first soak your sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds for about 8 hours.
Mix the raw oats, seeds and chopped dried fruit together in a bowl.
In a food processor, combine the agave, dates, coconut oil, vanilla bean and sea salt until smooth.
Pour over dry ingredients and mix them well.
Dehydrate the rawnola at 105ºF for about 12 hours.
Once ready, break up the rawnola into pieces.
    Refrigerate until ready to use.
To make the smoothie bowl, blend all ingredients until smooth.
The smoothie should be quite thick, so if needed, you may need to add more frozen blueberries until you reach your desired consistency.
Pour in a bowl and decorate with your toppings.
    Enjoy!

Leafy greens are also high in chlorophyl which is the living energy from the sun, and allows plants to absorb energy from light.

You can imagine how much more energised you will feel when you are getting this goodness straight into your body in an easily digestible liquid form like your Green Power Smoothie!

But you can also use any of your usual Protein Powder.

Other ones that we use are a good quality Whey Protein, like Glycowhey from Syntec.

Or a Whole Grain Sprouted Brown Rice Protein. We started with SunWarrior, then Ezy Protein, then Eden Health Foods- There are now tons of different brands out there, and they all are [and taste] pretty much identical.

For those of you who think that you are too busy to make a power smoothie in the morning, it literally only takes a few minutes.

While you have the blender going, you can pack everything away and re-fill your ice tray, and when it’s done simply pour it into a shaker / glass jar ready to take with you, rinse your blender and you’re done!

Make sure you drink your green smoothie straight away, as if you let it sit for a while, it tends to separate.

So if you do take it with you to drink in the car on your way to work, don’t forget to drink it up fast!

Kids love green smoothies too, and they are a great way to sneak in some extra goodness to their diet. Get the whole family on board, and give it a try! Once you start experimenting you will be amazed at what you can sneak in and barely taste it.

So have some fun and get experimenting and let us know how you go!
    :)
