[What is Andrographis?]

Andrographis paniculata is a bitter tasting annual plant, referred to as the “King of Bitters.” It has white-purple flowers and it is native to Asia and India where it has been valued for centuries for its numerous medicinal benefits. Over the past decade, andrographis has become popular in America where it is often used alone and in combination with other herbs for a variety of health purposes.

[How does it work?]

According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the active ingredient in andrographis is andrographolides. Due to the andrographolides, andrographis has potent anti-inflammatory and antimalarial properties. It also has antimicrobial properties, meaning it can help to fight off and prevent infections from harmful microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria and fungi. In addition, andrographis is a powerful antioxidant and it can help to prevent free radical induced damage to your cells and DNA

Cold and Flu

Scientists have discovered that andrographis helps to boost the immune system by stimulating the body’s production of antibodies and macrophages, which are large white blood cells that scavenge harmful microorganisms. It is taken for both the prevention and treatment of the common cold, and it is often referred to as Indian echinacea. It might help lessen the severity of cold symptoms such as sleeplessness, fever, nasal drainage and sore throat.

Cancer, Viral Infections and Heart Health

Andrographis may also help to prevent and treat cancer, and preliminary studies done in test tubes found that extracts of andrographis help to treat stomach, skin, prostate and breast cancer. Due to the herb’s antiviral properties, andrographis is used to treat herpes and it is also currently being studied as a treatment for Aids and HIV as well. Andrographis also promotes heart health and can help to prevent the formation of blood clots as well as to dissolve already formed blood clots. In addition, the herb relaxes smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels and thereby helps to reduce high blood pressure.

Additional Benefits

Andrographis is used to promote gallbladder and digestive health. It also helps to support and strengthen the liver and it is used in combination with other herbs in several Ayurvedic formulations to treat liver disorders. Finally, andrographis extracts taken orally have been found to help neutralize the poisonous effects of snake venom.

Dosage and Precautions

The therapeutic dose of andrographis is 400 mg, twice daily, for up to 10 days. Although andrographis is considered safe in humans, the NYU Langone Medical Center warns that animal studies suggest that it may impair fertility. Andrographis may cause unwanted side effects such as headaches, fatigue, allergic reactions, nausea, diarrhea, altered taste and pain in the lymph nodes. It may also interact with certain medications and as with any supplement you should consult your health care practitioner before taking the herb.

Een korte uitleg over fytotherapie door Prof.dr. Jan M. Keppel Hesselink, voorzitter Stichting IOCOB.
Binnen de fytotherapie wordt behandeld met onderdelen van planten. Er zijn twee hoofdvormen van fytotherapie: de reguliere fytotherapieen de complementaire fytotherapie. De regulierer fytotherapie maakt gebruik van onderdelen en preparaten van planten waarvan de gewone geneeskunde de werking vanerkent, zoals Ginkgo Biloba extract voor etalagebenen. Dit preparaat is een regulier geneesmiddel en is ook als zodanig geregistreerd. De complementaire fytotherapie maakt gebruik van meestal onverdunde extracten van planten, in de vorm van tabletten, crèmes en druppels.
De internationaal geaccepteerde definitie van fytotherapie kan bij de ESCOP gevonden worden.

De Nederlandse vereniging voor Fytotherapie onderscheidt vijf belangrijke contexten voor het gebruik van fytotherapeutica:

de reguliere (moderne westerse) geneeskunde,
de westers traditionele (natuur-)geneeskunde, de antroposofische geneeskunde,
de traditionele Chinese geneeskunde,
de Ayurvedische (Aziatische) geneeskunde,
de vele vormen van fytotherapie die te vinden zijn in geneeswijzen uit andere landen, zoals de Afrikaanse landen en in de Islamitische geneeskunde.
De fytotherapie kan opgevat worden als een onderdeel van de natuurgeneeskunde.

IOCOB zal veelbelovende fytopreparaten onder de loep nemen en het wetenschappelijk onderzoek beschrijven. IOCOB streeft naar een stringente analyse van het product, om tot een gewogen uitspraak te komen, of het product en de indicatie zinvol is en of er voldoende wetenschappelijk bewijs bestaat. Fytotherapeutica kunnen ook bijdragen aan de moderne inzichten in lastige te behandelen ziekten. Zo is er een Chinees kruid gevonden dat geelzucht bij kinderen kan verbeteren, omdat het een leverreceptor kan activeren voor billirubine, de gele kleurstof die in het bloed zit.

Dat er plantenpreparaten zijn die bij chronisch prostatisme zinvol zijn is algemeen bekend. Eind 2007 bewees een Franse groep onderzoekers dat het geven van een plantaardig middel (waarin o.a. Saw Palmetto) samen met een regulier middel (een alfa blokker) beter effect gaven dan de middelen afzonderlijk. En dat beide middelen even werkzaam waren. Een voorbeeld van complementaire behandeling in de meest klassieke zin van het woord.
In het September nummer van het tijdschrift Urology melden Franse onderzoekers de resultaten van een gerandomiseerde studie met 4 armen: een behandeling met placebo, met een klassiek regulier middel (de alfa blokker Doxazosine), een plantenmiddel (waarin o.a. Saw Palmetto), en de combinatie van beiden:

A randomized controlled study of 4 groups of male patients diagnosed as chronic non-bacterial prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP-CPPS) according to the NIH classification strategy. Group I of 35 men treated with alpha blockers (Doxazosin) of 2 mg daily. Group II of 35 men treated with phytotherapy (saw palmetto and P. africanum) with the standard dose. Group III of 35 men treated with combination of both and Group IV 28 men treated with placebo as a control. NIH-Chronic prostatitis symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) was measured before and 3 month after treatment.

Er werd gemeten wat de effecten waren na 3 maanden.

Effecten vergelijkbaar, beide actieve middelen beter
De klachten qua pijn en plassen, en de kwaliteit van leven waren voor het begin van de behandeling allen vergelijkbaar. Na behandeling bleken alle 3 de actieve behandelingen beter te zijn dan placebo, en de combinatie was weer beter. Een bijzonder resultaat!

After treatment, there was a statistically significant difference between the placebo group and all the other 3 treatment groups. Pain score was improved by 66.1%, 74.2% and 80.1% for groups I, II and III respectively with only significant difference between the combination group and the alpha blockers one. Urinary symptoms improved by 66.8%, 41.3% and 72.2% respectively with significant difference between the combination therapy and phytotherapy group. Quality of life improved in all 3 groups but better in group III 59.3%, 58.4% and 71.4% respectively.
