Brief Introduction
Salicin is a naturally occurring compound found in the bark of several species of trees, primarily North American in origin, that are from the willow, poplar, and aspen families. White willow, from whose Latin name, Salix alba, the term salicin is derived, is the most well known source of this compound, but it is found in a number of other trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants as well being synthesized commercially. It is a member of the glucoside family of chemicals and is used as an analgesic and antipyretic. Salicin is used as a precursor for the synthesis of salicylic acid and acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin.
A colorless, crystalline solid in its pure form, salicin has the chemical formula C13H18O7. Part of its chemical structure is equivalent to the sugar glucose, meaning it is classified as a glucoside. It is soluble, but not strongly so, in water and alcolhol. Salicin has a bitter taste and is a natural analgesic and antipyretic, or fever reducer. In large quantities, it can be toxic, and overdoses may lead to liver and kidney damage. In its raw form, it may be mildly irritating to skin, respiratory organs, and eyes.

Greetings! Turmeric is a powerful hedge against cold and flu virus! Learn about this more in my video.
Turmeric is a spice widely used though most popularly on the Indian subcontinent. It is a mellow, mildly spicy, and somewhat earthy flavoring (somewhat surprising, as it is related to the ginger plant), yellow in color and inclined to stain any and all surfaces.
Regular use of turmeric has been found to reduce the occurrence of Alzheimer’s disease and may play a role in its treatment. It is also being studied as a natural remedy for arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and similar conditions, as it has anti-inflammatory characteristics.
Turmeric’s primary active component is a molecule called curcumin, a powerful antioxidant. It is possible to purchase this component as a standalone supplement. Other organic compounds in turmeric have been found to offer anti-fungal and general antibiotic value. A number of studies are also pursuing turmeric as potentially being part of a natural cure for various cancers.
When taking turmeric as a health aid, it should be remembered that curcumin is substantially more bioavailable when taken along with a bit of black pepper.

The turmeric plant has a long history of use in alternative cold remedies. Turmeric root has been used as an anti-inflammatory in Chinese medicine for hundreds of years, and its efficiency has been backed up by clinical studies.
The Turmeric Plant
The turmeric plant originated in southern Asia. A relative of the ginger plant, turmeric grows up to six feet high and features yellow, trumpet-like flowers.
The turmeric root is the part of the plant that is used in alternative cold remedies. It is also used as a spice and as food coloring. Ground turmeric root is a vital ingredient in curry powder and is part of many Indian dishes. When ground up, turmeric root is a yellow powder.
Benefits Of Turmeric
The benefits of turmeric come from its active ingredient, curcumin. Curcumin gives the turmeric root its yellow color, which is used to both color food and to dye fabric.
According to Chinese medicine, the benefits of turmeric root extend far beyond a common cold remedy. Over the years turmeric root has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
· arthritis
· bruises
· chest pain
· colic
· digestive disorders
· flatulence
· jaundice
· menstrual conditions
· toothache.
Western medicine has investigated some of the benefits of turmeric. The use of turmeric as an anti-tumor agent is under investigation, as is the possibility that the turmeric plant’s anti-inflammatory properties could relieve arthritis symptoms.
It is the anti-inflammatory benefits of turmeric root that make it a home remedy for the common cold. Turmeric relieves the nasal inflammation associated with the common cold.
Turmeric Root Warnings
Turmeric is generally a safe herbal supplement, but there are situations in which the benefits of turmeric are outweighed by the risks.
Pregnant women should avoid using turmeric fluid extract. Also, if you are taking NSAIDs (non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs), blood thinners or certain hypertension drugs, consult with your doctor before using turmeric root home remedies.
Turmeric As A Cold Remedy
Turmeric supplements come in a number of forms, including:
· as a fluid extract
· in tinctures
· powdered.
Turmeric root can be used in more than one home cold remedies. One of these alternative cold remedies recommends boiling half a teaspoon of powdered turmeric root in 30 milliliters of milk, letting the mixture cool and drinking it once or twice a day to relieve throat inflammation. As the milk comes to a boil, you can breathe in the steam for added effect (just be careful not to burn yourself with the hot steam).
A second turmeric home remedy for the common cold is to breathe in smoke from burning turmeric powder to increase nasal discharge. Be warned, however, that burning turmeric creates a strong odor.
Finally, here’s a home remedy best used when cold symptoms are just beginning: Open one or two turmeric capsules and mix the turmeric with some honey. Symptom relief should come quickly.
