Natural health practitioners have long used milk thistle to treat a variety of ailments to successfully rejuvenate the human body….

Native to the Mediterranean region, this unique plant quickly spread throughout the world as its notoriety for addressing liver and pancreas issues spread. Easily identifiable by its thin, needle-like purple petals and upright stalks, milk thistle can grow to a height of 8 feet. While many consider it to be a weed, most parts of this herb are edible, including the leaves, flowers, and stems. However the seeds are the most valuable part. Known by many names including Our Lady’s thistle and Mary thistle, this unique flowering herb is beloved by herbalists the world over.

Although early herbal experts didn’t know the name of all the beneficial compounds in milk thistle, current scientific research has isolated and named a few of these amazing compounds. This purple flower contains silymarin, an extremely potent antioxidant capable of extraordinary feats in appropriate doses. While folk remedies call for using different parts of the plant, the most powerful compound, silymarin, is extracted from the seeds. The plant also offers other antioxidants as well as flavonoids and nutritional benefits. For over 2,000 years people have used milk thistle to improve their health.

    Here’s a short version :)

    1. Detoxifies the Liver

This 2010 article found that milk thistle is “the most well-researched plant in the treatment of liver disease”. It possesses three key active compounds, or isomer flavonolignans, that make it a triple benefit to the liver: silybin, silydianin, and silychristin. These three powerful compounds support the liver by both detoxifying and strengthening it.

Since a variety of things damage the liver including alcohol, over-the-counter and prescription drugs, and other toxins, it’s imperative to repair this vital organ. In fact, milk thistle may stop toxins from binding to the liver cells.

Studies show that milk thistle not only protects liver cells, but also reduces liver inflammation. Beyond detoxification, this herb is used to treat a variety of conditions affecting the liver including cirrhosis.

Since the liver works tirelessly to detoxify the body, working to assist the liver often results in better skin, better system function, and better overall health

    2. Supports Heart Health

Want to feel younger? One important step to achieving youthfulness is taking care of your heart. Recent studies support milk thistle’s ability to support the heart in several ways. First, this herb can lower cholesterol levels.

Recent studies reveal that this herb can lower low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, levels (the bad kind of cholesterol). Second, milk thistle shows promise in lowering an individual’s risks of experiencing heart disease when taken on a regular basis.

    3. Combats Cancer

Want to live a long, healthy, cancer-free life? Milk thistle can provide an important piece in forming an anti-cancer strategy. Early research suggests that the compound silymarin’s antioxidant powers can fight certain forms of cancer including breast and prostate cancers.
